It has come to my attention that quite a few Doms don’t understand brats, so I’d like to take some time to explain our behavior from the perspective of a brat myself.
There are a lot of misconceptions about us. One of the most common ones is: how can we be submissive if we keep challenging authority?
The thing is, brats don’t have an aversion to authority. We love submitting, but unlike traditional subs, we like to make it into a game. For us, doing exactly what we’re told can get a bit boring after a while and we thrive on excitement. That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy submission, it just means we like to spice things up. Bratting is simply playful submission, not resistance to submission. It relies on communication and consent between a brat and a Dom. Without them, it stops being bratting and just becomes disrespect.
Brats thrive on chaos and there’s nothing we enjoy more than pushing buttons. When I say pushing buttons, I don’t mean crossing a Dom’s boundaries. Brats who do that are in the wrong and I’d rather not be associated with that. A real brat knows where the line is. If someone ignores your boundaries or safe words, that isn’t bratting so it shouldn’t be interpreted as such. What I mean is doing things we know will get a reaction. Think of it as walking up to the edge of the cliff and pretending you might jump but never actually jumping.
Why do we do it? Well…because it’s fun. Seeing a Dom’s eyes light up when you challenge their authority can be exciting. That moment when you realize you might’ve pushed a little too far and need to start running, because you know your punishment won’t be gentle…to some that might seem strange. Wanting to be chased, punished, maybe fucked a bit more roughly than usual…but we enjoy it thoroughly.
But the biggest reason we brat is attention. We’re definitely attention seekers and there’s nothing a brat enjoys more than a Dom’s attention. The easiest way to get that attention is through teasing and talking back. If you’ve never met a brat before, it might look like a challenge, but to us, it’s often a way of showing affection.
In the end, brats aren’t your arch nemesis. They’re just needy little attention seekers who want to be fucked into submission and then cuddled afterward. They walk a thin line, but they don’t cross it. That’s what a brat is.
Not everyone will like that and that’s okay. Brats aren’t for everyone. But I (and every other brat) would really appreciate it if people toned down the judgment when they don’t really understand our reasons for being the way we are.”
